Load Management – Defined

See also Demand reduction. Utility activities designed to influence the timing and amount of electricity customers may use.  Practical info: Load management is the responsibility of transmission system operators. When system load approaches maximum generating capacity, operators must either find additional supply or find ways to curtail the load in order to prevent blackouts. Load management programs seek to lower peak demand during specific, limited time periods by temporarily curtailing electricity usage or shifting usage to other time periods. Load management reduces system peak demand very well, but can have little or no effect on total energy use. Its effects are temporary and of short duration.
